66 For instance, in the US an antimonopoly lawsuit was filed in 1998 against Microsoft for abuse of its monopoly position in the field of application software. However, since Microsoft sells its products all over the world, in August 2000 the EU also launched formal investigation procedures for the company. Also, with regard to the merger of the US companies Boeing and McDonnell Douglas in 1997, the EU announced that it regards the merger as a violation of the EU Antitrust Law, and launched an investigation. The final decision on that case was that the merger does not constitute a violation of the EU Antitrust Law, so in principle the EU accepted the merger.
