8 When the yen appreciates, export prices are not very sensitive to changes in exchange rates. In contrast, export prices are sensitive to exchange rate changes when the yen depreciates. This is because it is more difficult to raise prices when the yen appreciates than it is to cut prices when the yen depreciates. Furthermore, the markup corresponding to changes in exchange rates is between 0 and 1.
