(52) "Royalties and license fees" in the balance of payments statistics indicate a net outflow, or a deficit, on the contrary to the technology trade surplus in the Survey of Research and Development. This is because the "royalties and license fees" cover "trademark, design and copyright fees" in addition to "patents, utility model rights, know-how, technical guidance, etc." as covered by the technology trade.
