(49) Some of the banks also saw the total of capital and legal reserves decrease as a result of transfer of capital reserves to earned surplus due to mergers and other business realignment. Major banks as a whole suffered a loss not in unrealized capital gains on stocks but in the variance of the estimate due to stock price declines.
