Note 3-93

(93) Another problem with regard to women and pension was that under the survivor's pension system, if the wife of a double-income household wanted to receive the pension for the bereaved upon the death of the husband, she had to give up a considerable amount of the premiums she had already paid. With regard to this point, the 1994 system reform has made it possible for the wife to receive two-thirds of the pension for the bereaved (= a half of husband's old age welfare annuity) plus a half of wife's old age welfare annuity as a third option in order to reflect women's past contributions more on their pension benefits.
